In 2005, City Municipality of Nova Gorica, project holder of the Sabotin - Peace Park project, successfully applied for funds from the Community Initiative Programme Interreg III A Slovenia-Italy which is intended to support cross-border cooperation between Slovenian and Italian organizations in the fields of economy, social development and environmental protection.
Sabotin - Peace Park is a cross-border project with an overall objective to diversify tourist offer in the area of the Goriška/Gorizia region through the promotion of peace. The idea of establishing a peace park on Sabotin is based on the turmoil of World War I in the Posočje/Isonzo, claiming many casualties among soldiers and the civil population. Now, the era of wars and fronts, separation, closed borders and distrust is over and we are entering the era of lasting peaceful co-existence and cooperation. With the project, we wish to create a tourist product that will offer visitors an opportunity to relax in scenic natural surroundings while at the same time it will serve as a reminder of the senselessness of violent solutions to conflicts. To achieve this, basic tourist infrastructure is being developed on Sabotin and in its vicinity. Information points, a theme trail, marked cycling and hiking trails and refitted caverns from the World War I will help visitors to get familiar with attractions and peculiarities of the area. Furthermore, we wish to attract visitors not only to Sabotin but to entire Goriška/Gorizia region by organizing events which are planned to become traditional.
